BACKGROUND
Traditionally, the assembly of teams has been conducted by a manager or class instructor. This method can often lead to incompatibility between team members and reduced performance output by the team.
ABSTRACT
Northwestern researchers have developed a networking platform for team formation, that is driven by collecting network data from each participant. The platform provides the opportunity to better understand the assembly behaviors of people through the application of communication theories and the analysis of digital trace data. Matching and ranking algorithms were designed to provide theoretically driven recommendations for team membership. The platform is a web-based application where participants enter personal data in the form of a survey that is used as part of profile creation. The survey collects data relating to scheduling availability, demographic information, relationships to others in the network, scholastic performance and history, personality attributes, leadership ability, interpersonal and social skills, and creativity skills. The user-entered data is used to build a personal profile similar to most modern social networking websites (e.g., LinkedIn and Facebook). Based on a set of queries determined by the user a recommendation is then made to show a possible set of teammates.
