The current invention developed at the University of Missouri is a unique non-invasive device that will assist in controlled, supported, and measured knee flexion exercises to improve knee flexion and overall range of motion. This system is adjustable and patient controlled to provide a measured gentle, prolonged stretch of the knee for greater comfort, safety and efficacy. This system is designed to be used in-clinic and at home so that a coordinated rehabilitation program is in place for comprehensive communication among patients, therapists and healthcare providers. This system will improve nonsurgical, pre-operative and post-operative management for knee flexion disorders, reduce complications and costs, and improve outcomes for patients with knee pain, knee injury, and those undergoing major knee surgery.More than 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year in the United States and the most common limitation for these patients post-surgery is loss of knee motion. Current methods for improving knee range of motion can be painful for patients or are ineffective. If loss of knee motion is not prevented or restored, then arthrofibrosis, a condition where knee motion is permanently limited, is a common consequence after knee injury or surgery. A better device is needed to help patients restore full knee motion in order to regain their comfort and function. Potential Areas of Applications• Improve knee motion and treat knee flexion disorders during rehabilitation in non, pre, and/or post-operative settings • Prevent arthrofibrosis to reduce the number of post-op surgeries to remove scar tissue to regain knee flexionMain Advantages of Invention• Patient (not device) controlled to create greater safety and comfort• Inexpensive compared to other knee flexion devices currently on the market• Built in device to accurately measure flexion angle and to monitor progress• Can be used at home without clinical supervision, reducing number of PT visits and costs to the healthcare systemSTATE OF DEVELOPMENTOngoing; Prototype developed and patients being recruited for testing LICENSING POTENTIALSeeking licensee with the potential to continue research and commercializePATENT STATUS: Under EvaluationTECHNOLOGY INNOVATORS: James L.
