Overview
The expression of useful foreign traits inplants is a major focus in plant biotechnology. Introduction of heterologousgenes of interest into plant cells generates the desired qualities in theplants of choice. It also leads to the further understanding of molecularpathways involved in disease development and secondary metabolism in plants. Moreover, by engineering plants with specific foreign genes, the responses of plants to abiotic and biotic stress and stress related metabolism can be analyzed. Thus, there is a need for plant promoters that can be used to drive the expression of genetically engineered genes in plants.
Invention
UK researchers are isolating and characterizing the subgenomic transcript (Sgt) promoter from the mirabilis mosaic virus (MMV) for use in plant genetic engineering. Our inventors have developed plantexpression vectors with the Sgt promoter from MMV. This Sgt promoter is used to transform plant cells, plant expression vectors including a MMV Sgt promoter, chimeric genes including a MMV Sgt promoter sequence, and transgenic plants, plant cells, and plant parts, including seeds, which contain the MMV Sgt promoter in a chimeric gene.
Applications
- the expression of chimeric genes in transgenic plants
Advantages
- used to direct and express foreign genes of interest in plants
- furthers theunderstanding of molecular pathways involved in disease development
