Hydroxyl Radical Formation during Ozonation of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: Performance Optimization and Demonstration of a Reactive CNT Filter

详细技术说明
Dr. Cwiertny and his lab at the University of Iowa have invented a reactive filter consisting of immobilized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In contrast to other forms of CNTs, the immobilized CNTs enhances disinfection and oxidation of pollutants in wastewater treatment systems when used in conjunction with the ozone system. Specifically, the presence of CNTs during ozonation promotes hydroxyl radical, the strongest oxidizing agent in water used during the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). Ultimately ozonation of CNT results in a new AOP mechanism that is more efficient and cost-effective in purifying wastewater. Our inventors have identified a permeable CNT layer immobilized on an inert filter support that can be integrated into wastewater treatment. Overall this invention could revolutionize the wastewater treatment industry by allowing large volumes of water to be treated with relatively low CNT masses.
*Abstract

While the conventional water treatment has been effective in converting wastewater to drinkable water, a new generation of micro-pollutants such as hormones, pharmaceuticals and endocrine-disrupting compounds in wastewater effluent has increased scrutiny of water recycling. It is estimated that the world population will reach 2-3 billion people around the world. Additionally, an estimated that 85% of the world's population lives in the driest half of the planet. As an industry, the wastewater market size is $262 Billion as of 2014 and is expected to grow at a rate of 4.5% to reach $313 by 2018, municipal wastewater has the highest share of 92%, industrial waste water has 8% share. Thus, efficient wastewater recycling is a global must.
