Removal and recovery of CO2 from a post-combustion gas - 1928

*Abstract

Overview

The use of scrubbing solvents to capture CO2 frompost-combustion gases is the most mature technology in coal-fired power plants.  Conventional processes, while generally effective for theirintended purpose, incur costs in the form of at least energy costs and capitalcosts for equipment to accomplish them. As a result, a demand has arisen for aprocess and system for carbon capture and recovery with minimal energy andcapital costs.  UK researchers are developing a process for removing andrecovering CO2 from a post-combustion gas to address these needs.

Invention

Researchersat the University of Kentucky have developed a process for the removal andrecovery of CO2 from post-combustion gases.  The process incorporatesmembrane-based CO2 enrichment of post-combustion gases prior to absorption, coupled witha heat-integrated aqueous CO2 capture system and a two-stage solventregeneration process to provide a desired CO2 purity from utilityflue gases.  This process would be especially useful for coal-fired power plantslooking to decrease the economic impact of their operation by efficientlyremoving carbon dioxide from combustion gases, and more specifically, for thosecommercial scale power plants concerned with meeting the carbon capture goalsrecently set forth by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Applications

  • carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Advantages

  • high mass transfer during the CO2capture from post-combustion flue gases
  • lower process energy requirements
  • reduction in capital cost forcooling tower and auxiliary equipment by approximately 15%

Development Stage:  Pilot scale (0.7MWe) at a power plant

IP Status:  U.S. Patent No. 9,409,120
