Systems and Methods for MR Microscopy and Pathological Analysis of Resected Tissue

详细技术说明
Thisinvention provides systems and methods to image resected tissue at highresolution using magnetic resonance microscopy for pathological analysis.
*Abstract

Standard magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) is a sensitive (94%) screening test for detecting breast cancer, but canlack specificity (26%). To obtain a definitive diagnosis, patients undergopercutaneous biopsy and/or surgical resection of suspicious lesions. However, preparation for pathologicalanalysis takes at least 12 hours, which limits the value to the surgeon.Subjective selection of slices by the pathologist also introduces thepossibility of sampling error.

Cornell inventors have developedsystems and methods involving tissue preparation, a custom-builttransmission/receiving coil and an MRI system to obtain ex-vivo images fromtissue. Benign and malignant breast tissues and lymph nodes wereimaged using this system. This system can achieve an imaging spatial resolutionof 60 x 60 x 90 μm3,which is orders of magnitude better than conventional breast MR imaging. This process, generally referred to asMagnetic Resonance Microscopy (MRM), may be achieved in approximately 1 hour.

PotentialApplications

  • Quick pathological analysis of breast cancer, lymph nodesand other tissues, which can potentially guide intra-operative decision makingfor a surgeon
  • Provide a navigation tool to guide a pathologist to areas ofinterest within a resected specimen

Advantages

  • The speed of the technique offers the possibility to guide intra-operativedecision making
  • Achieve an imaging spatial resolution of 60 x 60 x 90 μm3,which is capable of revealing characteristic features of both benign andmalignant tissue
  • Images can be obtained through an entire resectedspecimen without physically slicing the tissue, reducing sampling error
