Caloric Titration is a proven method for preventing age-related weight gain via daily weight measurement and data entry into a web-based computer program that displays average and weight history. It prevents weight gain by indicating very early whenbody weight begins to increase enabling people to make changes in their foodintake or exercise patterns to return their weight to previous levels beforethe increase in body weight is so large that a return is impossible. Thechanges individuals make are unique to each individual to find a method thatworks best for them. There is no single formula that works for everyone. The method builds confidence in individuals by demonstrating successful weight control due to small changes and preventing major weight gain.
The new Caloric Titration Scale (CTS) incorporates this technique into a bathroom scale to eliminate the data-entry step and provide more immediate feedback than the web-based computer program, making the system broadly available even to those without internet access. An LCD display on the scale provides instant access to weight history in graph format, to appreciate more quickly the relationship between intake and body weight. By shortening the time between weighing in and viewing the graph, the CTS can strengthen associations between intake and/or expenditure with changes in body weight, reinforcing behaviors that help maintain body weight at the desired level.
Studies of targeted age groups that typically experience weight gains indicated that the weight gains can be prevented when the Caloric Titration system is used. The CTS is designed to accommodate up to five different people to facilitate use by families or groups of workers in the workplace. Advanced feature options for the CTS include data download via WiFi or USB port for further analysis, and connection to the internet for combination with popular weight loss or calorie counting programs.
Potential Application: Weight control systems to prevent age-related weight gain and/or enable slow weight loss
Advantages
- Provides immediate weight history to enable correction of a small weight gain with a decrease in food intake or an increase in exercise
- Supports weight control, maintenance and/or slow, sustainable weight loss
- Does not require an internet connection
- Accommodates up to 5 different users
- Portable
- Data can be downloaded for further analysis or transferred via WiFi for use in other programs/apps
