Predicting Earthquakes Before They Occur Using GPS Technology

Thistechnology can predict large earthquakes an hour before they happen, usingGPS-based measurements of the total electron content between the satellites andthe ground. It detects changes and avoids false alarms. Advance notice of anearthquake coming could reduce damage by enabling natural gas suppliers and pipelines to be shut down,people to be warned to leave buildings near the epicenter, and tornado-likewarnings to be broadcast in affected areas
