This invention is a platform foroptical communications on chip performed via multi-mode waveguides with reducedcross-talk between modes, and its design method. It is based on TransformationOptics that allows us to create multi-mode optical interconnects on chip withreduced (ideally zero) cross-talk. Transformation Optics allows us to freelymold the flow of light by deforming a virtual space and re-creating thatvirtual space in reality using a medium composed by a varying (effective)refractive index. For instance, we can bend the virtual space and apply thistransformation to a multi-mode waveguide to create a multi-mode waveguide bend. The key aspect of this design method is that fundamentally it does notintroduce any mode cross-talk in the structure. The transformation from thevirtual space to the real space via a varying refractive index medium isoptimized to produce a medium with refractive index in the range allowed by thefabrication technology, and to minimize the residual anisotropy of the medium.
