System for Increased Cooling Rates in Plunge Cooling of Small Biological Samples
- 详细技术说明
- This invention is a system which rapidly cools biological material with greater material survival rates.
- *Abstract
-
This invention is a system which rapidly cools biological material with greater material survival rates. In order to reduce damage to biological material, sample cooling must not occur until the sample contacts a cryogenic surface. This is accomplished by removing the cold gas layer which forms above liquid cryogens. When the gas layer is removed, samples are subjected to an abrupt transition from ambient to cryogen temperature as the sample enters the liquid. The cold gas layer can be removed by several methods, including:
- Projecting a stream of warm dry gas coaxially with the sample's path to the cryogen surface
- Projecting a stream of warm dry gas along the surface of the cryogen
Potential Applications
- Cryopreservation of proteins, cells, tissues, and other biological molecules
- Biological, environmental and medical research
- Sperm and tissue banks
Advantages
- Higher survival rate after cryopreservation and thawing
- Faster cooling rates than convention methods (100X)
- Less mechanical stress on sample
