A new class of biodegradable polysaccharide-based hydrogel was developed for use in a range of medical applications including controlled drug release, surgical implants, and wound healing. The hydrogels can absorb large quantities of water and exhibit improved swelling properties in water without loss of mechanical and structural integrity associated with increasing degrees of substitution.
By altering the ratios of the two components that make up the hydrogels, their properties can be changed, e.g. to vary the time release of molecules encapsulated in the gel. In addition, the gels are relatively easy and inexpensive to process since their precursors dissolve in common organic solvents.
