Highly Parallel Electrochemical Detector Array on a Chip

详细技术说明
Cornell researchers have developed a new CMOS electrochemical detector suitable for high-throughput recording of amperometric and other electrophysiological currents from biological cells and other biological samples.
*Abstract

Cornell researchers have developed a new CMOS electrochemical detector suitable for high-throughput recording of amperometric and other electrophysiological currents from biological cells and other biological samples. The detector incorporates an array of low-noise current amplifiers based on a novel potentiostat circuit and a two-dimensional array of electrodes, each of which is connected to one such "pixel" amplifier. The pixel size is reduced to cellular dimensions due to a shared amplifier architecture. This design allows for fabrication of a multi-channel amplifier integrated into a single microchip and enables simultaneous recording from a scalable number of electrodes. The device will be useful in high throughput drug testing on ion channel function, transmitter release, and chemical testing from hundreds of cells simultaneously. It can be applied in pre-clinical drug-testing, medical diagnostics, biodefense devices, and environmental testing.

Potential Applications

  • Highly parallel patch-clamp recordings for drug testing and research
  • High-throughput amperometric recordings of hormone and neurotransmitter release
  • Electrochemical pathogens detection
  • Electrochemical detection of hundreds of substances in medical diagnostics and environmental testing

Advantages

  • Scalable low noise current detector
  • Highly parallel simultaneous measurements on a single chip under controlled conditions
  • Eliminates bulky and expensive external amplifiers and converters
  • Reduced size and cost
  • Integrates with commonly used cell culture formats
