-
An all-silicon, in-plane, electrically driven laser or RCLED based on slot-waveguides is described. This micron-sized silicon device can be coupled with POF to replace copper cables in home networks or other high-volume markets where glass fiber is cost-prohibitive. POF is light weight, easy to terminate, insensitive to electromagnetic interference, and has significantly lower installed cost compared to the alternatives. Quality factors as high as 33,000 were predicted in simulations.
Potential Commercial Applications:
- Telecommunications
- Data communications products
Advantages:
- Enables low-cost POF alternative
- Permits electrical injection
- High optical mode-active material overlap
- CMOS compatible
- Small size
- High quality factor (Q)
