A Hybrid Fiber-Optic and Electrical Rotary Joint
- 总结
- Researchers at Purdue University have developed a hybrid fiber-optic and electrical rotary joint in which optical and electrical signals transmit simultaneously through a rotational joint. This technology provides an efficient way for optical and electrical coupling simultaneously at a rotary interface. This technology is easy for the catheter to plug and use without further action. The fiber section of the rotor easily changes to match all kinds of fiber types in the catheter, which saves money and time, especially for laboratory research. This design improves the optical coupling and reduces the risk of catheter damage due to fast rotation.

- *Background
- Hybrid optical and electrical coupling is essential in many multimodal imaging techniques, while high performance hybrid coupling is essential to the imaging quality. To realize simultaneous optical and electrical coupling, a bare fiber butt coupling or a pair of collimators are currently used. Bare fiber butt coupling requires the embedding of the fiber ends in the rotary joint with a pigtail. The distance between the pair of collimators induces a large insertion loss and coupling variation.
