*Abstract
Reference Number 04UMS059Entitled: MINIATURIZED MULTICHANNEL EVAPORATIVE LIGHT SCATTERING DETECTORLiquid chromatography (LC) is a widely used technique for chemical separations and analyses. LC is evolving and will increasingly evolve in response to current trends in analytical instrumentation for Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medical and Biotechnological research. The trends are (i) smaller analytical sample sizes, (ii) smaller amounts of chemicals used in analytical procedures, (iii) more rapid data collection and (iv) increased analytical sensitivity. LC column sizes are decreasing dramatically and modules containing multiple columns that operate in parallel are being developed. Use of these new multiple columns for LC gives the potential for greatly increased analytical throughput. However, multiple columns require use of either multiple detectors or of a single multichannel detector. Multichannel detectors that measure Absorbance, primarily in the UV, have been recently developed for this purpose (see above, Patel & Herrera). Absorbance detectors offer excellent sensitivity but they have one severe limitation; they are not “universal.” That is, if the substance to be detected (analyte) does not absorb light, then an Absorbance detector cannot be used. Alternatively, evaporative light scattering detectors (ELSD’s) are universal; i.e., in principle, all nonvolatile or semivolatile analytes give rise to an ELSD signal. Thus it would be extremely advantageous to use ELSD’s for multichannel LC detectors.
