As the metrics and standards for vehicle fuel efficiency increase the use of lighter weight materials necessitates coating processes to be compatible with a wider range of metallic alloys, including magnesium. Hexavalent chromium and phosphate based coatings have been used for decades in the automobile and aerospace industries to protect metallic assemblies from corrosion and provide adhesion and compatibility with subsequent paint and primer layers. Chromate compounds are toxic and phosphate baths are incompatible with Mg, requiring alternative, more expensive processes to be used. Cerium based conversion coatings have the potential to be a drop in replacement for existing coating operations as films can be deposited simultaneously on Al alloys, Mg alloys, and galvanized steel substrates. Precipitation of a corrosion inhibiting, paint compatible cerium based pretreatment layer on galvanically active binary and ternary combinations of the alloys simplifies the manufacturing assembly process, resulting in cost, energy, and space savings.
