Non-Confidential Abstract of Invention: Glassy Al-based alloys are being considered for structural applications in the aerospace industry. These alloys involve the addition of Rare Earth (RE) and Transition Metal (TM) elements. Because a high atomic percent of these additions are needed for good glass-formability, such alloys typically have a high volume fraction of an intermetallic phase or phases in the devitrified state and this results in alloys that have low ductility so that their use as structural materials is highly questionable. However, with appropriate secondary processing, these materials can evidence significant ductility. Thus, the principal objectives of this disclosure are to describe the processing approaches and their effect on mechanical properties.
