*Abstract
Abstract of US Patent 6,923,362 - Integral channels in metal components and fabrication thereof: An internal channel in a metal body for use in applications where internal fluid flow within a metal body is desired, as in a heat exchanger. The internal channel is formed in the metal body by frictionally stirring with a pin plunged into the metal body, and traversing the metal body with the pin.Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: Cooling or heating channels are used to actively control temperature of components under severe application conditions. For example, the copper plates used near the exit of shuttle engines have active cooling channels. Manufacturing of such cooling channels requires advanced machining techniques and that leads to very high cost. Friction stir processing can be used to create integral cooling channels in metallic materials. This simple technique can lead to very significant cost saving.
