Abstract of US Patent 5,494,700 - Method of coating a substrate with a metal oxide film from an aqueous solution comprising a metal cation and a polymerizable organic solvent: A method for preparing a substrate coated with a polycrystalline, metal oxide film using polymeric precursors. The oxide films prepared by the method of the present invention are dense (i.e., substantially free of cracks and pinholes) and may be used, for example, as an electrolyte or electrode in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) or as gas separation membranes.Non-Confidential Abstract of Invention: A novel thin film synthesis technique, the ethylene glycol process, has been developed for the fabrication of dense oxide films (0.1-2 ?m) from precursor solutions at relatively low temperature. Dense, smooth and homogeneous oxide films, e.g. (CeO2)0.8(SmO1.5)0.2, (ZnO2)0.84, (YO1.5)0.16, La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3, were obtained on both porous and dense substrates by spin-coating the polymeric precursor and subsequent heat treatment. Crystallization of the deposited films occurred at temperatures as low as 320 degrees Celsius on Pt and LSCF substrates. These resulting oxide thin films are suitable for demanding solid oxide fuel cell components or gas separation membranes applications.
