*Abstract

Abstract of US Patent 6,337,413 - Fatty acid esters to dissolve polystyrene for production of commodity material useful for production of polymers: The present invention relates to a method for solubilizing polystyrene in a fatty acid ester, whereby the resultant polystyrene fatty acid ester composition can be used in a variety of polymeric applications, including forming an improved polyester. The present invention also relates to the resultant polystyrene fatty acid ester composition.Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: We have discovered that various esters of biogenic oil fatty acids (i.e., methyl soyate, the methyl ester of soybean oil) can be a very strong solvent for polystyrene. This polystyrene is typically, but not limited to, packing material or insulating material. We have made solutions of methyl soyate containing 80% by weight of scrap polystyrene. These mixtures have then been polymerized to provide useful resins for composite materials, as well as coatings for explosives.
