University of MissouriOffice of Technology Management & Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 15UMC042Organic Chemical Precursors for Spray PyrolysisThe integrated flame spray pyrolysis (iFSP) technology involves a novel design of the spray process to overcome difficulties in current state-of-the-art spray technologies (ultrasonic, thermal, pressurized gas, etc.). This technology uses non-conventional and new chemical precursors including deep eutectic solvent (DES) (or ionic liquids) with high metal loading to produce powders or thin films for various applications. Process integrations also incorporate a downstream process for nanoscale surface coating (e.g., carbon, alumina) and material crystalline phase control. The significance of the technology is that (1) the new iFSP technology makes mass production possible and (2) the key processes of synthesis, surface coating, and materials processing are all vertically integrated into one apparatus, substantially reducing manufacturing cost. Battery materials manufactured with the iFSP will be used to develop high energy Li-ion battery cells.
