*Abstract
NEW METHODS FOR SEPARATING RADIOACTIVE LANTHANIDE METALS FOR RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL USEMany lanthanides are capable of being produced by direct production methods within a reactor flux but these have carrier-added properties which include not all of the atoms being radioactive. The indirect production method results in all the atoms of interest being radioactive but these are also mixed with the non-radioactive parent isotope. These new methods will enable the production of carrier-free radioisotopes by separating the parent from the daughter isotope and make it possible for development of radiopharmaceuticals that were previously impossible to produce. Current methods for separating lanthanides, referred to here as manual liquid separation, require many hours to days of close monitoring of eluants to determine when the separation occurs and the separation has been found to be incomplete. This also requires the use of highly corrosive acids to prepare glassware and apparatus for use. The new method requires minutes instead of hours and results in complete separation of the daughter isotope from the parent isotope enabling labeling of the lanthanide with a targeting moiety. This method does not require extensive pre-cleaning of resins required by the manual liquid separation. Also, less corrosive wastes are produced in the process. POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS:• Excellent alternatives to isotopes currently on the market as they provide excellent payload capability to deliver radioactive isotope to the cancer site unlike currently available isotopes which are carrier added and provide much less payload capability when bound with a ligand• Could be used as a diagnostic agent to evaluate a patient for a certain type of treatment and for treatments of cancer• Ability of a surgeon to use these isotopes during surgery by making use of a hand held probe to detect the radioactive malignancy and remove it is another very useful tool in combating cancerMAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION:• Simplifies the process of obtaining carrier-free lanthanides by means of a fast, easy and relatively cheap process• Improved means of producing these lanthanides is feasible to scale-up to much larger batches for commercial production of these chemicals for use in cancer treatmentsPOSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES OF INVENTION: • NoneSTATE OF DEVELOPMENT:• Prototypes are being constructedFURTHER R&D REQUIRED:• With the limited ability to bind the lanthanide metals to ligands which attach to targeting molecules, further research is being performed to determine what is the limiting factor on the labeling of these metals by performing further studies on bindingLICENSING POTENTIAL:• University seeks licensee with the potential to commercializePATENT STATUS:• Patent application is plannedINVENTOR(S): Cathy S.
