This invention involves two Fe2O3-based energetic composites prepared by the self-assembly approach. In the first, mesoporous Fe2O3 was prepared and fuel nanoparticles were impregnated therein. In the second, Fe2O3 nanorods were prepared and fuel nanoparticles were self-assembled on these nanorods. Due to the homogeneous distribution of the oxidizer and fuel in these nanocomposites, the rate of energy release is much higher than available with current technology.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS: Explosives industry; Energetics materials industry; Pyrotechnics and propellant industries.MAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION: Much higher burn rate than current technology; Higher rate of energy release than current technology; Explosives can be made in a smaller package.STATE OF DEVELOPMENT: Demonstrated and tested in a laboratory setting.FURTHER R&D REQUIRED: Need to further optimize the design for commercialization.
