This invention deals with the fabrication of a diagnostic chip to determine burn rate characteristics of nanoenergetics, which is vital for evaluating their performance. Existing methods available to determine burn rate characteristics are highly cost intensive and require high-precision imaging systems. We have been able to fabricate a microchip for diagnosis of nano-energetic materials. This method provides a more accurate and cost-effective tool to measure the flame propagation velocity, and other ignition characteristics. This invention also has possible applications in detonation devices, fuses, and micro-power generation.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS: Measuring burn rate characteristics of energetic materials, in particular nanoenergetic materials.MAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION: Lower cost than currently available methods; Very accurate measurement of flame propagation velocity; Uses small amount of nanoenergetic material.STATE OF DEVELOPMENT: Demonstrated and tested in a laboratory setting.FURTHER R&D REQUIRED: Need to further optimize the design for commercialization.
