Laser Guided Radiation Wound Probe
Pinpoint the source of radioactive shrapnel Minimize the amount of tissue debridement or amputation otherwise necessary; Detect a radiation source from a distance Minimize medical staff radiation exposure Quickly locate and remove radiation sources Reduce victim radiation dose
Locate concealed sources of radioactive material This device provides emergency medical staff a means of efficiently pinpointing the location of small, embedded high activity and high specific activity (HASA) radiation sources
A novel laser guided radiation wound probe has been developed by University of California, Davis researchers. In the event of a terrorist dirty bomb attack or accidental explosion of a high activity and high specific activity (HASA) radiation source, this probe allows for precise detection of embedded sources of radiation. This device provides emergency medical staff a means of efficiently pinpointing the location of small, embedded HASA radiation sources. To do so, the wound probe utilizes a small Geiger-Mueller detector inside of a lead pinhole collimator. To pinpoint the location of the radiation source, a diode laser beam is fired through the collimator port as a patient is scanned in the x, y, and z planes.
