A Macro Model for Supporting QoS Over Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANets)

总结
Lead Inventors: N. F. Maxemchuk, Ph.D.; Congzhou ZhouProblem or Unmet Need:Mobile ad hoc networks (MANets) consist of a collection of mobile nodes which construct a communication network by forwarding data between currently reachable nodes. MANets allow mobile devices to spontaneously form a network without the presence of existing communications infrastructure. These fluid networks have applications including: sharing of internet resources in remote areas, rapid transfer of data throughout a building or crowd, and distribution of location specific information. A limitation of current MANets however is their inability to route traffic robustly, especially in geographic locations where physical obstacles can hinder communication, resulting in poor quality of service (QoS) for high bandwidth applications. A technology which supports the implementation of QoS would open the MANet market to high bandwidth applications over mobile peer-to-peer networks. This technology is a system for modeling MANet as if they were a typical wired network. A wired network is defined by nodes, super-nodes and bottlenecks. On the traditional wired internet, every computer (node) is not connected with every other one, but rather each is connected to a router (super-node). Super-nodes move data between local nodes, as in inter-office email, or to other super-nodes for long-distance data transfer. Connections between super-nodes are called bottlenecks. By identifying analogs for all these components in a MANet, this technology takes advantage of existing flow control strategies typically reserved for wired networks. Obstacles to wireless communication such as physical obstructions that block wireless signal or areas with no mobile devices are identified. Areas without any internal obstacles are analogous to super-nodes, since mobile devices (nodes) communicate freely within them. Bottlenecks are then defined as the narrow areas between obstacles that connect super-nodes. Software that can flexibly define network configuration in MANets will result in fast and robust routing of data packets, ensuring a high QoS for all users.
技术优势
Can apply traditional network traffic and flow algorithms to ensure QoS over MANets Macro model based on mobile positions is robust enough to adapt as devices move
技术应用
Military communications in a hostile area or communications between relief workers when local network infrastructure is damaged or non-existent Voice over IP telephony over MANets Location-based services and data sharing in a locally defined geographical location Extending the reach of WiFi hotspots
