The ability to concentrate a sample on microchips within a microfluidic device is a key functionality that can be difficult to achieve using conventional manufacturing methods. Traditional methods include sample stacking using isoelectric focusing and on-chip solid phase extraction. However, these methods are expensive and complex to implement. This technology provides a simple, fast, low-cost method for sample concentration. Using laminar flow to pattern the surface chemistry of the channel, this technology creates hydrophobic and hydrophilic sections within the channel. The interface between the two sections creates a fluid "wall" in the middle of th micro channel. Such a virtual wall creates a large liquid-air interface. This interface is particularly useful in phase-exchange applications (e.g., artificial lung).
