This invention provides a drawing process that can be used to fabricate, in an ambient environment, a variety of nanowires with characteristic diameters below 100nm, in lengths of 1mm, 10 mm or even longer, and with properties that are non-porous (solid) and three dimensional.
*Abstract

Electrochemistry has been used to fabricate various metallic nanostructures, due to its versatility for plating and surface finishing of a wide range of materials, through two traditional methods. However, the first method is incapable of creating complex, three dimensional nanostructures while the other usually produces porous structures with feature sizes in the tens of micrometers. This invention provides a drawing process that can be used to fabricate, in an ambient environment, a variety of nanowires with characteristic diameters below 100nm, in lengths of 1mm, 10 mm or even longer, and with properties that are non-porous (solid) and three dimensional.

DESCRIPTION/DETAILS

The continuous fabrication of a nanowire is made possible by drawing liquid - consisting of solvent and solute - through a small aperture in a nanopipette which allows fast evaporation of the liquid solvent and solidification of the solvent in free space and in an ambient environment.

This technology produces nanowires from any water-soluble materials or other volatile solvents, with different diameters down to sub-100nm and different lengths up to 1 nm, 10 mm or longer by controlling the drawing process through speed, the concentration of the liquid solution, the humidity and temperature of the environment and the types of liquid solution.
