Foam Composite Protects Packages and Harvests Energy During Shipping

总结
Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new composite that has the ability to simultaneously apply vibration suppression to a packaged product and provide power to sensors that can monitor the product's environment. Coupling a triboelectric generator to a layer of polymer foam forms the composite. The generator harvests energy from its environment, which allows for the vibration of the polymer foam for protection of the package's content. The energy is allocated to sensors that can monitor the temperature, humidity, vibration, and other factors around the package to ensure its safety.

*Abstract

*Background
Shipping packages in today's globalized world is a major part of the economy given the online marketplace. Consumers want to receive online purchases quickly without having to leave their home. Even though there have been advances in shipping technologies, there are faults that result in damage to the package contents. Packaging peanuts and bubble wrap are solutions that work well most of the time, but they do not protect against other factors such as temperature or humidity.
