Ion/Ion Reactions in Ion Storage Devices
Purdue University researchers have developed a technology which allows for the mutual presence of positively charged and negatively charged ions such that the ions can react with one another and whereby the kinetics of reaction of ions of selected mass-to-charge ratios can be reduced relative to those of nonselected ions. This capability allows for highly charged ions derived from a particular high mass molecule, usually formed via electrospray ionization, to be accumulated into a selected charge state. Furthermore, this capability allows for ions present in a complex mixture of ions of like polarity to be selectively removed from the population of ions undergoing ion/ion reactions. This capability is particularly useful for the analysis of complex mixtures of high mass molecules.
