- *Abstract
-
A variety of afflictions – including prostate cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia, acne vulgaris, and androgenetic alopecia – have a basis in problematic androgen and/or inflammatory pathways. Northwestern researchers have identified and synthesized a compound (CpdA), a stable analog of a biological compound from the African shrub Salsola tuberculatiformis Botschantzev, which may be useful in treating these ailments. Compound A is a non-steroidal ligand that binds to both androgen (AR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR). It uniquely inhibits AR function and strongly enhances GR's anti-inflammatory function. CpdA has strong anti-inflammatory potential in different animal models, and it has reduced side effects as compared with glucocorticoids. CdpA has commercial potential as an anti-inflammatory, anti-androgenic agent for the treatment of a variety of androgen-dependent diseases with an inflammatory component.
