A method for preparation of a cohesive non-porous perovskite layer on a substrate. The method forms a thin film of a solution containing a perovskite material dissolved in a solvent onto the substrate; applying a crystallisation agent to a surface of the film precipitates perovskite crystals from the solution to form a cohesive non-porous perovskite layer on the substrate.
