This blade can improve the energy production of a wind turbine and is particularly useful for low and unfavorable wind conditions. Both the extensible blade and bio-inspired shape modification approaches may be used to improve lift-to-drag ratio 20-30% compared with conventional wind turbine blades. Assessments from three separate sites onshore and offshore around Lake Erie demonstrate major improvements in wind energy output.
