Technology provides for a making a co-doped carbon material and using it as a catalyst in fuel cells and batteries, and in particular, as an electrode in primary or rechargeable zinc-air batteries. The composition comprises a mesoporous carbon material doped with nitrogen and phosphorous (NPMC). The NPMC exhibits catalytic activity for both oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction.A technical paper has been published in Nature Nanotechnology on April 6, 2015 and a provisional patent application 62,124,163 has been filed.
