*Abstract
The current invention provides methods to create an assortment of millimeter-wave-to-terahertz (MMW-THz) components and devices based on the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through the gaps of planar-metal wire grids (i.e., strip-grids). These have the following features:(1) The transmission and reflection of THz radiation can be adjusted by varying the fraction of metal (fill factor or effective fill factor) in the wire-grid structures where the ΓÇ£structured surface plasmons (SSPs)ΓÇØ are excited; (2) The EOT is very sensitive to incident polarization, which provides extremely high extinction ratios up to 50 dB or higher in a single structure; and (3) The electric field of incident THz radiation polarized perpendicular to the wire grid is concentrated and enhanced in the gaps, which enables more sensitive MMW-THz detectors based on distributed Schottky-diode rectifiers.
