- *Abstract
-
Current treatment strategies for retinal degeneration (such as gene therapy, anti-angiogenic therapy, and growth factor treatment) focus mainly on slow degeneration, wherein the majority of implanted cells die. Some of the other key limitations associated with existing strategies are use of polymeric scaffolds with flat (2D) surfaces, potential cell loss, low integration, obstructed trabecular outflow and intraocular inflammation. Moreover, inter-photoreceptor matrix (IPM) and retinal extracellular matrix (ECM) are known to play key roles in development, photoreceptor function, and cellular signaling; however, these materials have never been investigated as a cell scaffold material. This invention discloses novel, retina extracellular matrix based biomaterials of different developmental ages, chemical modifications and species, having potential to overcome existing limitations/unmet needs.
