Fluorescent Particles Comprising Nanoscale ZnO Layer and Exhibiting Cell-Specific Toxicity

技术优势
These are the only nanoparticles known to have dual toxicity to both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, with high selectivity. The ability to release drug at sites of interest while tracking the exact location of its delivery using imaging methods employing fluorescence. The shell has bio-toxic activity and unlike other metallic shell nanoparticles, ZnO generates oxygen that can be transformed into reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals in the cells.

*Abstract
Nanoparticle-assisted drug delivery, cell imaging, and cancer therapy are important biomedical applications of nanotechnology. Some experiments with fluorescent core-shell nanoparticles to add functional cancer-destroying layers have suffered from a lack of significant cell specificity. Boise State presents novel multifunctional nanostructures synthesized for the first time: fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-encapsulated SiO2 core-shell particles with a nanoscale ZnO finishing layer that shows significant selective toxicity to cancer. These are the first fluorescent dye core-shell ZnO multi-functional smart nanoparticles. Our smart nanoparticles could be used for particle tracking, cell imaging, antibacterial treatments, and cancer therapy. The prospect of an anti-cancer and imaging agent in one compound is intriguing.

Title: Fluorescent particles comprising nanoscale ZnO layer and exhibiting cell-specific toxicity
Usefulness: Fluorescent particles comprising nanoscale ZnO layer and exhibiting cell-specific toxicity
Summary: (I) is useful for killing cancer and bacteria cells. The method is useful for making a fluorescent dye core nanostructure with a nanoscale ZnO and Zn surface layer (all claimed). (I) is useful for particle tracking, cell imaging, antibacterial treatment and cancer therapy. (I) (fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-encapsulated ZnO particles) were tested for their ability to kill bacteria ( Escherichia coli ) cell. The results showed that (I) reduced the number of viable bacterial cells to below 99.9% colony forming units/ml within 12 hours and viable cells were completely absent after 48 hours of treatment.
Novelty: Composition, useful for killing cancer and bacteria cells, and for particle tracking, and cell imaging, comprises fluorescent dye core nanostructure with nanoscale zinc oxide surface layer
