Researchers at Montana State University have developed an instrument and process which overcomes the above issues and captures species specific microbes from large sample volumes. Concentration can be increased from a starting solution of 102 to a concentrate of 105. This system is not based on layered filter media and thus has high flow rate and lower incidence of fouling. This new system (capture component and process) is not intended to compete with other membrane systems on capture efficiency. Such filter systems utilize membranes with ever decreasing pore sizes to ensure very high capture efficiency. However, those systems suffer from low flow rates (it is difficult to pass fluid through the membranes) and they easily become fouled. Also, they are generally not organism specific ΓÇô they capture material based on size, not species.

High sample concentration is critical for generating accurate results from biological testing systems. Greater sample concentration leads to a lower threshold of detection and lower incidence of false positive or negative results. Getting high sample concentrations from current instruments and method which utilize membrane networks compromises flow rate and increases fouling problems.
