BackgroundAs with early stage ovarian cancer, diagnosis of endometriosis is often difficult and can involve invasive procedures (laparoscopy, open surgery). Even in diagnosed patients, it remains a challenge to predict who is at risk to develop endometriosis associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) later in life, demonstrating the urgent need to develop specific and non-invasive (preferably blood based) biomarker assays for early stage ovarian cancer and precursor endometriosis.TechnologyInvestigators have developed a novel, bloodbased microRNA (miRNA) expression profile to predict and diagnose endometriosis, EAOC, or serous ovarian cancer. The laboratory screen is based on the discovery that unique microRNA signatures can differentiate patient populations between the following categories; healthy, endometriosis, EAOC, or serous ovarian cancer.Applications1. Early diagnosis of endometriosis, EAOC, or serous ovarian cancer2. Predict development of EAOCAdvantages1. Non-invasive diagnostic test2. Superior stability of miRNAs in blood3. High sensitivity and specificity4. Can be used to develop screening test for a large populationStage of Development* Retrospective clinical data is available* Prospective clinical studies underwayProvisional Patent Application Filed
