Large amounts of bone tissue lost to injury or disease are notoriously difficult to replace. Loss of this tissue may result in the amputation of a limb or a serious deformity. Ceramic scaffold materials have been used with limited success. Investigators at the University of Pittsburgh have discovered that the elastomeric polymer Poly(Glycerol Sebacate) (PGS) may be used as a scaffold for bone repair. In vivo data shows that the scaffold was colonized by osteoprogenitor cells and that a critical size long bone defect was bridged in as little as 8 weeks.Application* Bone tissue repairAdvantages* Biocompatible, resorbable, and elastic* Permits mechanical loading of the graft* Pore size conducive to bone healingProvisional Patent Application filed
