Pinpointing the exact location of damage, tracing cells as they travel through the body, delivering chemotherapy precisely to tumor cells, molecular contrast and therapeutic agents may make each of these activities easier. Investigators at the University of Pittsburgh are using red blood cell sized microbubbles in various innovative applications. These nitrogen filled hydrogel bubbles can be used in imaging, diagnostic, and drug delivery capacities. The bubbles can be visualized with standard ultrasound technology and at the proper frequency can be exploded to release a therapeutic cargo. Applications:* Image blood flow in a patient * Track the movement of stem cells through the body* Visualize and diagnose diseases such as ischemia or cancer by attaching specific antibodies to the bubbles.Stage of Development:Phase I and II clinical trials have been conducted for myocardial perfusion echocardiography. IP Status: Several Issued and Pending applications in both the US and abroad
