Salt-free poly(vinylamine) and vinylamine copolymers are formed by heating N-vinylformamide or N-vinylformamide copolymers to a temperature from about 50.degree. to 225.degree. C. in an aqueous medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal which is a member of either the first transition series or of Group VIII.
