Researchers at Nagoya University and Meijo University have synthesized a novel neurotrophic factor (NGF)-enhancing compound, which shows memory recovery effects on aged mice and senescence-accelerated mice (SAM). This compound is designed based on a steroid glycoside discovered from Okinawan Crown-of-Thorns Starfish. Researchers have found that the starfish-derived compound has NGF-enhancing (in vitro) and memory recovery effects (in vivo) and can pass through the blood-brain barrier. However, the quantity of starfish derived compound is very limited in nature. To solve this problem, researchers synthesized a compound (analog 1), which shows medicinal effects comparable to those of the natural steroid glycoside.
