Most of the currently available detection methods are suitable for liquids and vapors, and only a few techniques can be directly applied to solids. On-line detection methods for solids operated under ambient conditions are important in a large variety of applications including homeland security, forensics, pharmaceuticals and industrial quality control. Conventional technologies are based on optical reflectance or absorbance, which in many cases do not provide adequate information. Modern laser spectroscopic approaches are based on either breakdown spectroscopy which provides only elemental composition or Raman spectroscopy, which is of low sensitivity and can only be applied to Raman-active compounds. Therefore, introduction of a new detection technology is much desired.
MPI is a process in which an atom or a molecule can simultaneously absorb more than one photon and become ionized. A tunable laser radiates the specimen with a series of wavelengths. At each wavelength, the MPI setup measures the current resulting from the ionization of the sample. This new spectroscopy provides a fingerprint of the examined material which is more detailed than absorption/reflection spectroscopy. In addition, this method allows for quantification, and the current limits of detection are in the low pico-mole range.
