In this project, we focus on the development of viable bioprocesses to produce platform molecules for production of specialty products. In this case, food waste biorefinery concept will be applied for succinic acid and bioplastic production.
The resultant food waste hydrolysate contained the essential nutrients, which can be used to produce succinic acid and bioplastic by using different micro-organisms. Small anaerobic bioreactors will be used for small-scale succinic acid fermentation. A bench-top bioreactor will be used for larger scale fermentation. These two types of equipment are currently available in laboratories. Actinobacillus succinogenes and Halomonas boliviensis are the bacteria which will be used for succinic acid and bioplastic production, respectively.
