They are used as bone fillers in areas of the skeleton where bone may be deficient e.g. post-trauma with segmental bone loss, post-bone tumor surgery where bone has been excised and after total joint arthroplasty. They may be used to hold and fix artificial joint components inpatients undergoing arthroplasty, as a strut to stabilize the anterior column of the spine after excision surgery and as a bone graft substitute in spinal fusions.
