The fabrication of functional nanoarchitectures with the desired dimensional structure is of great importance because of their unique optical, magnetic and catalytic properties and huge potential applications. Traditional photolithograph, more advanced soft-lithography and microfluidic are the current methods to shape microstructures from submicron to millimeter length scales. However, these methods are not very user-friendly.

This invention describes a rapid and inexpensive technique for generating nanotextured surface involving microwave assisted hydro- or solvo-thermal treatments of polymer films coated on surfaces. It involves the transformation of polymer film into uniform islands of regularly shaped, nanometer-sized polymers for obtaining either superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic surfaces. Those polymer islands can then serve as template for the deposition of molecules, clusters and particles of metal, inorganic oxides, semiconductors and polymers, which the actual purpose may vary according to the size, shape and chemical compositions of these templates.

This functional nanoarchitecture can have numerous potential applications in electronics, sensors, optics, medicine, environment and chemical manufacturing.
